Type "2048" into a search engine and you get hundreds of results: websites, apps, extensions, clones of varying quality. Some are excellent, others are mostly vehicles for ads. This guide helps you choose where to play 2048 online for free, on computer or mobile, and what to check before starting a game.
The 6 criteria of a good 2048 version
- Free, no sign-up. 2048 was born free and open source. A version that requires an account to play adds nothing.
- Nothing to install. The game should launch in the browser. Avoid sites that push you to download a program or an extension.
- Little or no intrusive advertising. A discreet banner is fine; a forced video every two games kills the rhythm.
- Precise controls. Arrow keys on desktop, smooth swiping on mobile, without the page scrolling along with the tiles.
- Saving your best score, and ideally the current game, so you can come back later.
- Faithful rules. One new tile after each move (a 2 in 90% of cases, a 4 in 10%), one merge per tile per move.
The original 2048 by Gabriele Cirulli
The reference version remains the one by its creator, Gabriele Cirulli, released in March 2014. It can be played on the official site play2048.co, which was refreshed for the game's 10th anniversary in 2024. Its original source code is still available on GitHub.
Who is it for? Purists who want the original experience: 4 × 4 grid, 2048 goal, clean design. It's also the best place to practise the corner strategy.
2048 Deluxe: the 5 × 5 version with progression
2048 Deluxe, our version, is free to play on 2048deluxe.fr, with no sign-up and nothing to install. It keeps the basic rules and adds:
- a 5 × 5 grid, more strategic and longer;
- 10 permanent levels, from Scout to Titan, fed by the XP from every game;
- 4 power-ups (Bomb, Mega Bomb, Mega Bar, Second Chance) earned by creating certain tiles;
- a Flux gauge and missions in every game;
- 8 badges to collect.
The site automatically detects your device and opens the desktop version (keyboard) or the mobile version (touch, portrait). The game's interface is currently in French.

Online game portals
The big free-games sites (CrazyGames, Poki and others) often offer several versions of 2048 and its variants. The upside: lots of choice in one place. The downside: more ads and versions of uneven quality. Check the criteria above before getting attached to one.
Mobile apps
App stores are full of games called "2048". As early as 2014, publishers released their own versions, sometimes even before Gabriele Cirulli's official one. Before installing an app:
- check the publisher and recent reviews;
- check the permissions requested: a puzzle game needs neither your contacts nor your location;
- look for the "contains ads" and "in-app purchases" labels.
To play on mobile without installing anything, a touch-friendly web version such as 2048 Deluxe is often the simplest option.
Pitfalls to avoid
- "Free downloads" of 2048 for PC: the game plays online; there's no reason to install a program of unknown origin.
- Versions that cheat: some spawn more 4 tiles or place tiles in the worst spots to push you to watch an ad "to continue".
- Clones with no save: losing a 30-minute game because the page reloaded is frustrating.
